"Buddhist-dominated Thailand's new government, which came to power in a coup in September, has promised to address long-held grievances in the southern Muslim-majority provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani. A renewed insurgency in the three provinces since January 2004 has claimed 1,800 lives".
